A Landscape Painter's Glossary
From Jerry Yarnell

Some quick definitions of common painting terms and techniques:

  • Complementary colors
These are colors opposite each other on the color wheel (red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple). Complements are used to create color balance in your painting. A good rule of thumb is whatever predominant color you have in your work, use its complement or a form of it to highlight, accent or gray the color.

  • Dabbing
A technique used to create leaves, ground cover, flowers, etc. Take a bristle brush and dab it on your table or palette to spread out the ends of the bristles like a fan. Then load the brush with an appropriate color and gently dab on that color to create the desired effect.

  • Scumbling
A technique that uses a series of unorganized, overlapping strokes in different directions to create effects such as clumps of foliage, clouds, hair, grasses, etc. The direction of the stroke is not important.

  • Scrubbing
A technique that is similar to scumbling, but the strokes are more uniform in horizontal or vertical patterns. It's useful for underpainting or blocking in an area.

  • Drybrush
Load your brush with very little paint, then lightly skim the surface of your canvas to add color, blend or soften a color.

  • Wet-on-wet
When colors are blended together while the first application of paint is still wet.

  • Wet-on-dry
A technique used most often in acrylic painting. After the background color is dry, apply the topcoat over it by using one of the blending techniques: drybrushing, scumbling or glazing.

  • Feathering
A technique used to create soft edges. Use a light touch and barely skim the surface of your canvas.

  • Glaze (wash)
Refers to a mixture of a small amount of color diluted with water. Apply over a dry area of the painting to create mist, fog, haze, sun rays or to soften an area that's too bright. It can be applied in layers, but you must let each dry before adding the next.

  • Highlighting or accenting
Use pure color or brighter values of colors to give your painting its final glow.
